The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Chia Seeds may be this:
Let’s be honest.. how many of you or your parent’s had a Chia Pet?! I never did, but I remember always secretly hoping I would get the Chia Scooby as a birthday gift when I was a kid..
Up until a few months ago that is the first thought that popped into my mind too! Now I see this:
Chia Seeds are an awesome source of fiber, fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and antioxidants. It is also the richest source of Omega-3 fatty acids among non-marine whole food items. (Source)
I love adding a teaspoon or half a tablespoon of Chia Seeds to yogurt, oats, smoothies and cereals. It does a great job of plumping up and creating voluminous meals when the seeds are soaked in a liquid. Chia Seeds are amazing in over night oats and can thicken up a smoothie in a pinch! These small, but mighty seeds are the perfect super food and I try to incorporate them into my diet as much as possible. Since I don’t eat fish very often, this is the best way for me to get in my always important Omega-3’s. Here is a nutrient packed, and very filling breakfast that I enjoyed, which was filled with a variety of delicious ingredients including chia.
Peanut Butter Banana Chia Oats
Base Ingredients
1/2 cup oats
1 1/2 cups water
1 tablepoon flax seed
1/2 tablespoon chia seeds
Directions
Put all ingredients into microwave safe bowl.
Cover with plastic wrap. Microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir.
Microwave for an additional 1 minute while keeping an eye on the bowl to prevent mixture from bubbling over the sides. Thanks to the Chia Seeds, you should have a voluminous and fluffy bowl of oats!
1/2 very ripe banana, mashed
1-2 tablespoons all natural creamy peanut butter
The nutella + banana adds the perfect amount of sweetness. There is no need to add any other sweeteners to this bowl!
Questions:
Have you ever had Chia Seeds before? If so, what do you think? How do you incorporate them into your meals?
Who has ever owned a Chia Pet?! Be honest! Ha
I love chia seeds! I mostly frequently add them to my oats & yogurt, but I’ll add a sprinkle here or there to other foods as well!
most* frequently
I usually add a sprinkle to my bowl of cereal or into my smoothie, along with oats and yogurt..
I know not to add them to anything my husband eats though, because that may be crossing the line! lol chia seeds are one thing he doesn’t want a part of! lol
I use the chia seeds mostly in overnight oats, but your warm version looks delicious too.
It’s such a great way to thicken up the bowl! I mostly used water and they were as thick as if I had used milk or yogurt.
I have been wanting to try chia seeds for awhile now. Where do you buy them, Whole Foods? How much are they?
I bought them at Whole Foods in the bulk bin. I would suggest doing that initially if you want to try them, that way if you don’t like them you aren’t stuck with a huge bag. That’s what I did
I can’t remember what I paid, but I believe a 16 oz bag can range from $6-$9.
I use chia seeds in my oats pretty often – also good on yogurt, or in granola!
In granola sounds good! I wonder if you can bake it?! hmm..
I’m totally on a Chia seeds kick lately! I’m loving them in greek yogurt *drool*. Love this recipe, thanks for sharing it. PB+oats & chia seeds= FABULOUS!!
Yay! I love it too!
Makes greek yogurt extra thick as well!
I love chia seeds! I put them in my oats, yogurt bowls, granola and even smoothies!
Ya ya! Me too girl!
I eat chia seeds every now and then, but I STILL think of those damn chia pets every time I see or hear the word.
Ha ha me too! That’s why I can’t get anyone in my family to eat them lol They think the seeds are going to sprout in my stomach!
Hahahah!!! I love chia seeds, but they totally remind me of the Bart Simpson heads you can get from the store at christmas and grow his hair
This recipe looks AMAZING!! What a hearty way to start your day!!
xxoo
Ha ha for sure! It’s hard to get past associating chia seeds with chia pets! lol
Like you mentioned, I usually put them into overnight oats. This is definitely an easy and delicious way to incorporate the chia seeds (it has been sitting in the fridge… so lonely). I’ll have to try it on a cold day!
I love eating overnight oats in the summer, but usually I get on a hot oatmeal kick during the colder months. This way, I can incorporate chia’s all year round
this bowl looks amazing!!
Thanks Girl!
I just found chia seeds too–I love them in my oatmeal too!! Yours looks so yummy!!!
Love love love chia seeds! Not only are they great for you, they help add tons of VOLUME!
Oh for sure! My bowl of oatmeal was just water and chia’s made my breakfast so thick!
I love chia seeds! I try to add them to my oatmeal every morning and sometimes I even drink them
Oh wow! Drink them? I drink them in my smoothie if that counts..
I have somehow never tried chia seeds. But this looks like the perfect, simple and delicious recipe to try them in! Are they expensive?
I bought mine from the bulk bins at whole foods, that way I could just try a little before I committed to a big bag! I believe a 16 oz bag can range from $6-$9 though, but that is a lot of chia seeds and will last you a very long time!
